“Chess offers a lot more than trophies. It teaches strategy, abstract thinking, resource management, problem solving and perseverance.” - Robert Katende | Founder Katwe Chess Academy

My fascination with the game of chess began from about the age of 8 and since being taught by my dad. Back then, the focus was singular, to play as many games as possible until I beat him…and it took a LOT of games before I had my first win (dad didn’t go easy on me)! But once I did, and the more games I played with him and later on in chess tournaments, I discovered two undeniable traits that have come to serve me well personally and professionally:

  • Pattern Recognition (and the dexterity to be able to think/anticipate several moves into the future)

  • Scenario Planning (and the discipline to run scenarios through as many outcomes as possible)

These traits along with experience managing and leading multi-disciplinary teams on complex projects - requiring comprehensive analyses, strategic frameworks, and decision-making processes for successful design development and implementation – have been combined to be able to offer leadership and strategy consulting for the built environment applicable to other fields.

This offering brings together the traditional skills of a planning and design consultancy with the business and economics skills of a management consultancy in the delivery of integrated projects. By leveraging knowledge and past work with public and private sector stakeholders, able to develop integrated and market driven solutions to complex problems.

Areas of expertise include:

  1. Problem Framing

  2. Strategic Planning and Concept Development

  3. Business Model Assessment

  4. Large Scale & Regional Development Planning

  5. Risk Assessment/Management

  7. Strategic Forecasting and Future-planning

  8. Innovative Project Delivery

Biases are a major problem within organizations. Quite frequently, Leadership and Senior Management are unaware that they are bogged down in routine and ways of approaching problems that have become second nature that they fail to recognize the challenges in front of them require completely different thinking and tools. A fresh outsider perspective would be beneficial in these instances and such strategy consultation engagement will focus on:

  • Establishing a logical framework to assist in identifying the right problem(s) and path to resolution.

  • Identifying mid-to-long term growth opportunities for the organization with existing resources.

  • Establishing unique or competitive business models.

  • Providing strategic insights to allow the organization to focus on its core business functions.

  • Defining deliberate/strategic choices and trade-offs necessary for optimum results.

  • Actionable implementation plan that also enables the organization’s unique proposition.
